Paddle shifters are a feature that will either come as a standard on your luxury Jaguar vehicle or an available option. Most Chester Springs car shoppers often ask, “what do paddle shifters do and how do I use them?” The service team at Jaguar West Chester has your answers in this handy guide on how to use paddle shifters. Don’t hesitate to reach out to our Aston-area service center with any questions.

What do Paddle Shifters do?

Paddle shifters are found on sportier vehicles and trim levels as they allow drivers to quickly and safely switch gears. They are typically located behind or close to the steering wheel, and one paddle brings you down a gear while the other paddle brings you up a gear. When using a paddle, the clutch receives an electronic signal for gear selection, and the gear shifts.

If you’re not familiar with paddle shifters, don’t fret, as they are easy to use and are usually meant to help you better manage your RPMs. When downshifting correctly, you’re able to extend the life of your brake pads with the paddle shifters.

Using Paddle Shifters

It’s recommended to enter manual mode as it puts you in full control to paddle shift. Remember, the right paddle upshifts and the left paddle downshifts, and you can switch gears manually with ease as you’re driving through the Newtown Square area and beyond.

Shifting gears will not harm your vehicle, and they won’t change gears if:

  • You upshift before the engine reaches the lower limit of the higher gear
  • You downshift before reaching the upper limit of the lower gear
  • You press one paddle while the other is being held down
  • You press both paddles at the same time
  • You try to shift to third or higher while stationary
  • If you’d rather let the automatic transmission take over for a while, just enter D mode.
